Jiu Jitsu // Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
The origins of Jiu-Jitsu most likely lay in the grappling arts of China and Greece that were significantly refined by the Japanese throughout the Feudal Period (1185-1868). The battlefield art used by samurai was threatened by the socio-political climate of the Meiji Period and was preserved by Jigaro Kano’s style of Judo that changed the art into a style of grappling that enabled practitioners to train more without sustaining so many injuries. It was during this time of transition that Judo/Jiu-Jitsu was introduced to a Brazilian family, the Gracies, who then refined and spread the art throughout the decades (1915-current). Since coming to the United States by way of the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the early 1990’s, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been going through further changes and continues to evolve year by year.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is now one of the most respected and effective martial arts in the world today and has been adopted by all branches of the US Military, local and national law enforcement, Air Marshals and military forces from around the world. It is not based on strength or athleticism alone; its effectiveness comes from the use of leverage and body positioning to defend oneself in virtually any close quarters attack or assault. The student applies a variety of chokes, joint locks, pins and escapes to control his opponent.
