The San Shou Kickboxing class has been a huge success at Evolution Training. Instructor Anne Cooper has studied San Shou for 4 years directly under Master Jeff Bordelon of the Shaolin Institute in Thibodaux. Anne’s exhausting combination of warmup, skills, drilling and burnout exercises leave us educated, wiped out and enthusiastically awaiting the next class. This class is offered twice a week, and due to its popularity, we are extending the class from 60 to 75 minutes each…you speak…we listen.

At Evolution Training, we will continue to expand our programming as we find excellent instructors like Anne Cooper. There are many great martial artists around, but not many who can both DO and TEACH! We are very particular about our instructors at Evolution Training, and we are grateful to have found another passionate, reliable one to add to the team.

New YOGA Tune Up classes are now being offered at Evolution Training on Wednesday mornings! Class starts at 9:00 and runs till 10:15. Classes are currently only $10 per class and open to the public, which means that people do not need to have a monthly membership at Evolution Training to take the Yoga classes.

Yoga Tune Up is a head-to-toe health and fitness system combining Yoga, Calisthenics, Corrective Exercise and Body Therapy in a way that heals damaged muscle tissue, increases overall strength, and bolsters the immune system. Its restorative techniques create balance and flexibility in the body, while relieving painful injuries, improving coordination, and reducing stress. Yoga Tune Up brings a practical yoga philosophy into the nuts and bolts of healthy movement, challenging the body from every conceivable angle until breakthroughs occur – literally changing the nature of the tissues in the area being addressed.

The instructor for this class is Claiborne Davis, who regularly instructs at Wild Lotus Yoga in New Orleans. Claiborne has agreed to come down to Houma each Wednesday to share this challenging new style of Yoga.

Dave Camarillo’s Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu system is at the cutting edge of the evolution of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. By coaching a team of UFC and other professional fighters, Dave is constantly aware of the monthly developments in MMA and BJJ. He continues to refine techniques and incorporate them into his structured system that enables new students to rapidly learn a UFC-proven set of fundamentals. Dave’s Blue and Purple belt curriculums (Belt order: White-Blue-Purple-Brown-Black) have created state champions here in Louisiana in remarkably short periods of time.

Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu differs from other Brazilian Jiu Jitsu systems in that it emphasizes real-world tactics like focusing on wrestling that enables the student to maintain the more dominant ‘top game’ positions like the ‘mount’, ‘knee on belly’, and ‘side control’, instead of focusing on the more tournament style of a ‘closed guard’ game. Wrestling, Judo, and multiple submission attacks are all strong components of Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu, and students will have a firm understanding of and proficiency in the basics of these grappling arts by the end of their first year of training.

The CrossFit program at Evolution Training is Houma’s alternative to your typical fitness routine. Workouts are scaled to your current physical abilities, so no excuses…”I can’t do that” is no longer in your vocabulary!

Classes at Evolution Training are 60 minutes long and typically consist of a warmup phase (5-20 minutes) followed by the WOD (Workout Of the Day) and finally a warm down phase. During warmup or warm down, we often learn and practice technique for various exercises like the Olympic lifts, the Clean & Jerk and the Snatch.

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning brand that combines weightlifting, sprinting, gymnastics, powerlifting, kettlebell training, plyometrics, rowing, and medicine ball training. CrossFit contends that a healthy, fit person requires proficiency in each of ten general physical skills: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy. It defines fitness as increased work capacity across all these domains and says its program achieves this by provoking neurologic and hormonal adaptations across all metabolic pathways.

CrossFit athletes run, row, jump rope, climb rope and carry odd objects. They frequently move large loads quickly over short distances, and use powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting techniques. CrossFit athletes also use dumbbells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, kettlebells, and many bodyweight exercises. CrossFit is used in nearly 2,000 gyms worldwide and by many fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and military organizations including the Canadian Forces, and the Royal Danish Life Guards.

3 of our students competed in the South USA Cup on July 9th, 2011, bringing back 2 gold medals! Purple belt instructor Scotty Smith submitted both of his opponents (one armbar and one triangle) to win
his weight class (154#). Dylan Lopez won his first match, a tough one, on points (6-5) and then submitted his second opponent with an armbar from his closed guard. Check out the pics and videos section
for some visuals. Congratulations, fellas!

Win or lose, we learn a LOT as a gym whenever someone steps up and competes. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning and drilling techniques that we saw are important based on our students’ performances, so make it to as many classes as you can as we focus on these tournament concepts.
