Kids Karate in Houma versus Kids BJJ in Houma

Learn about the differences before choosing classes in BJJ or kids Karate in Houma LA…

In our Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu kids classes at Evolution Training, it takes many parents several weeks to learn the difference between BJJ and Karate. Some speak generally of kids ‘karate’ in Houma as though it is the term used for all martial arts. There are basically two types of kids martial arts in Houma:

  • Grappling – is any style of martial art that comprises techniques that rely on grabbing and controlling the opponent using body leverage as a way of achieving supremacy through throws and take downs, pins and submissions, as opposed to “striking” martial arts that focus on knocking out and/or hurting the opponent. Some grappling martial arts classes for kids in Houma include:
    • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) [available at Evolution Training]
    • Judo [available at Evolution Training]
    • Wrestling
  • Striking – is any style of martial art that utilizes fists, elbows, knees, or feet as weapons to hit, or strike, an opponent. Kicking, punching, elbowing, and kneeing are used until the opponent gives up or is knocked out. Some of these striking martial arts kids classes in Houma include:
    • Kickboxing [available at Evolution Training]
    • Boxing
    • Karate
    • Tae-kwon-do (TKD)
    • Muay Thai

Our Philosophy for Kids martial arts classes in Houma

At Evolution Training, our curriculum program focuses primarily on grappling by using Judo, wrestling, and BJJ in order to teach our young students first and foremost how to CONTROL their opponent, how to CONTROL themselves, and how to CONTROL their environment. This ability to control self and others is critical for kids dealing with bullies, school and personal stress, and difficulties with discipline or focus.

Once our students have proven that they can control their training partners without hurting them (usually takes about 6 months of training), then students become eligible to start taking our kids kickboxing classes in order to offer them a well-rounded martial arts education. After just one year in our program, many of our students have decided to compete and have become state champions! However, most of our students do not compete. They remain focused on learning self defense skills through our BJJ classes and kickboxing classes.

So before starting in kids karate in Houma, parents would do well to look into our program of multiple kids martial arts classes in Houma here at Evolution Training!

Self Defense, Combatives and Martial Arts in Houma LA

IMPORTANT CONCEPT ALERT:  Martial Arts in Houma is quite different than Self Defense training! Learn which is most appropriate for your needs.

Let’s start by looking at the definitions of Self Defense, Combatives and Martial Arts training!

Self Defense:

Self defense: the act of defending one’s person when physically attacked, as by countering blows or overcoming assault.

Self Defense focuses specifically on the tactics, techniques and strategies necessary to survive the most commonly encountered dangerous situations that citizens are likely to encounter in their daily lives.  This means that a good program for self defense in Houma would look at the statistically most common scenarios like mugging, sexual assault, home intrusion, etc.

Self Defense

Self Defense is primarily focused on techniques to get you out of a dangerous situation

Combat: fighting between armed forces.

Combative: ready or willing to fight.

The term Combatives is often used interchangeably with Self Defense; however, Combatives as a training concept was born in the military and refers to the modern techniques used to forcibly complete a given mission.  The definition of ‘combat’ here assumes that both forces are armed, and herein lies one of the major distinctions between self-defense and combatives.  Part of combatives training is learning to use various weapons such that you would carry a pocket knife, pen or other tools that you become proficient with through education and training.  Additionally, the mindset is different in that Combatives recognizes the necessity and advantage that aggression and a predatory mindset can have in various combat situations, whether it be wartime or civilian.  This supplemental training and mindset prepare you to ‘bring the fight’ to the attacker if necessary.

Combatives weapons training

Combatives training goes a step further to train in hand-to-hand, weapons and small group teamwork

Martial Arts:

Martial arts: any of several arts of combat and self defense (as karate and judo) that are widely practiced as sport.

Basically, the martial arts were historically developed with the expectation of a prolonged conflict (wartime, battles, etc.) against other trained individuals.  Each country developed different styles and traditions that they believed were most effective.  Martial arts training has developed over the centuries into sporting competitions like wrestling, Judo, Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Muay Thai, San Shou and Taekwondo competitions.   As each deadly martial art is adapted for live competition, many rules must be put in place for the safety of the practitioners. For example, you will not keep a training partner for long if you practice an eye gouge and blind him or her!!  We have a well developed team for striking and grappling martial arts in Houma at Evolution Training.

Kids who train in Houma martial arts like Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu learn true ‘work ethic’ and ‘mental toughness’ while having fun.

Example of the differences between self defense, Combatives and martial arts training…

“I have now been training intensely in the martial arts for over 15 years.  I started out under a Gracie BJJ school in California (3 years) before going to American Kickboxing Academy (3 years) where I learned Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu.  Then I trained another year of  Muay Thai, boxing, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and wrestling at Precision MMA in New York (1 year) before I earned my black belt in Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in 2008 under Dave Camarillo.  So after 9 years of training approximately 10-16 hours per week, I had never been shown a single technique for addressing a knife attack or even multiple unarmed attackers!  While training martial arts in Houma, I was able to attend a weekend course specifically on the concepts involved in defending against knife attack from a visiting expert, Tom Amok.  I was grateful for the knowledge and confidence that it offered in case I am ever encountered by an assailant armed with a knife.  Years later, I was excited to return to California to train again directly under Dave Camarillo for his Guerrilla Combatives Instructor Course.  This course and my supplemental training have opened my eyes to the more broad world of Combatives and given my martial arts training new focus.  It is with great excitement that I now offer Combatives classes in addition to our training in martial arts in Houma at Evolution Training.”

Cautionary note:

This distinction between self defense and martial arts training sometimes leads people to, I believe, the wrong conclusion that self defense training alone is best to keep someone safe and they should not bother with martial arts training. I consider this deeply flawed!  Click here to understand more…

IMPORTANT CONCEPT ALERT:  Martial Arts training is quite different than Self Defense training! If you are looking for a course, classes or training for self defense in Houma, then you need to first understand the difference between martial arts training and self defense (or combatives).  Basically, the martial arts are typically developed with the expectation of a prolonged conflict (wartime, battles, etc.) against other trained individuals (often engaged in now as sports like wrestling, Judo, Karate competitions).  Self defense focuses more specifically on the tactics, techniques and strategies necessary to survive the most likely dangerous situations that civilians may find themselves in daily life.  To read understand more about differentiating between martial arts training and self defense in Houma LA, click here to read more…

Programs and Courses that offer training for Self Defense in Houma LA:

First of all, there are many martial arts schools that say they teach ‘self defense’ in Houma. For example, many BJJ and Karate schools teach some self defense techniques (escaping from headlock, etc.), but they do not focus on Self Defense or Combatives as its own class.  I will say here that there are many EXCELLENT martial arts academies in Houma and surrounding areas; I have trained at several and can attest to their quality and community. However, I will focus here on programs that focus specifically on Self Defense in Houma, like Krav Maga and Guerrilla Combatives.

Guerrilla Combatives program at Evolution Training:

Guerrilla Combatives is a weekly class that starts with instruction in the important concepts to understand concerning self-preservation (self defense), like evasion, preparation, awareness, mobility, etc.  Techniques focused on are taken from the various grappling and striking martial arts, along with self defense specific skills.  Drilling and developing proficiency in the techniques are where the Guerrilla Combatives program excel because of our extensive knowledge in heavy sport training without accumulating injuries!  We focus on simple concepts and techniques that anyone can learn and implement because, in general, the more simple the strategy, the more likely it is to be effective in a highly charged situation.  These simple strategies are broken down into safe, repetitive drills that enable our participants to develop themselves thoroughly and confidently.  Classes are taught by Level I Certified Guerrilla Combatives Instructor Ernest “Waffle” Ellender, PhD, who received his Combatives certification and his BJJ black belt directly under Dave Camarillo (Inventor of Guerrilla Combatives).

Guerrilla Combatives in Houma is an official affiliate directly under Dave Camarillo who is considered one of the most experienced and accomplished instructors in the martial arts world.  Fortified with black belts in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, along with 8 very successful years of coaching MMA and training with UFC fighters, Dave began training specifically in Combatives in 2007.  He has now trained with various special operations teams and is Army Combatives Level 4 (the highest level) Certified.  His lifetime knowledge of grappling and striking, along with his training alongside elite military groups, has led him to create his Guerrilla Combatives program.
